The Global Transformer Shortage
A Major Challenge for Power Grids

Nick de Vries, the Chief Technology Officer at Silicon Ranch, compares a transformer to an on-ramp on the motorway. It boosts the voltage of electricity generated by solar plants to match the voltage of grid transmission lines. "They’re your ticket to ride," de Vries says. "Without a high-voltage transformer, you don’t have a project."

However, this "ticket" has become much harder to come by. The demand for transformers has surged worldwide, leading to wait times for new transformers that have doubled from 50 weeks in 2021 to nearly two years today, according to Wood Mackenzie. The wait for more specialised large power transformers (LPTs), which step up voltage from power stations to transmission lines, can stretch to four years. Transformer costs have also risen by 60% to 80% since 2020.

What’s Causing the Transformer Shortage?

Five years ago, de Vries became concerned that transformer shortages could delay his solar projects. To prevent this, he began ordering transformers years in advance. Silicon Ranch now has a pipeline of custom transformers to ensure their solar projects aren’t delayed by supply chain issues. They are not alone in this dilemma. According to Wood Mackenzie, a quarter of global renewable energy projects may be delayed as they wait for transformers to connect to local grids.

In India, the wait for 220-kilovolt transformers has increased from 8 to 14 months, potentially affecting nearly 150 gigawatts of new solar capacity. This shortage isn’t limited to renewable energy projects. It also affects utilities, homeowners, businesses, rail systems, and EV charging stations – any sector that requires a grid connection. For instance, in Clallam County, Washington, local authorities started denying new home construction requests in May 2022 because they couldn’t get enough transformers to step down voltage for homes. To address the backlog, utilities used refurbished transformers, but these are likely to have a shorter lifespan than new ones.

CRGO Steel: The Key to Transformer Efficiency

A major factor behind the transformer shortage is the limited supply of grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES), specifically CRGO steel. This steel is crucial for transformer cores, as it helps to increase efficiency and reduce energy loss during power transmission. The grain orientation in CRGO steel allows transformers to handle magnetic flux more effectively, improving their performance and extending their lifespan.

As the demand for CRGO steel rises, industries such as electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy are also competing for it, further exacerbating the transformer shortage.

Innovating Transformer Designs to Meet Modern Energy Needs

To address the shortage, engineers are rethinking transformer designs to increase efficiency, reduce reliance on scarce materials, and make them better suited to modern power grids. One important innovation is the integration of solid-state power electronics into transformers, allowing them to seamlessly switch between AC and DC power.

Traditional transformers can only handle AC power, but many modern technologies, such as hydrogen fuel electrolyzers, EV charging stations, and energy storage, all require DC power. The development of new transformers capable of handling both AC and DC will help power grids adapt to the needs of the future.

Modular Controllable Transformers (MCTs): Flexibility for Future Demands

Engineers are also developing modular controllable transformers (MCTs), which use semiconductors and active electronic components to convert electricity to different voltages and enable AC-to-DC conversion in a single step. These MCTs are flexible, modular, and adaptable, making them ideal for renewable energy applications.

These transformers will facilitate smoother integration of solar and wind power into the grid, ensuring a more reliable energy distribution, even when energy sources fluctuate.

Flexible Transformers: A Solution to the Shortage

Another breakthrough in transformer technology is the flexible LPT, which can handle varying voltage requirements without the need for complete redesigns. This innovation will reduce the need for customisation, speed up manufacturing, and alleviate supply chain pressures. The flexible LPT could become a universal spare part, helping to ease the transformer shortage.

Simultaneously, Siemens Energy is developing rapid response transformers – plug-and-play backups that can replace a failed transformer within weeks. Similarly, renewable energy company Avangrid has introduced a mobile transformer that can be quickly deployed to solar or wind projects.

The Role of CRGO Steel in the Energy Transition

As the world transitions to greener energy, CRGO steel will play a crucial role in this process. It’s not only essential for transformers but also widely used in EV chargers and energy storage systems. The shortage of CRGO steel is limiting the ability to scale clean energy projects, making innovations in transformer technology even more urgent.
