EU exported 1.3 million tonnes of aluminum scrap in 2025
René Djibril, Director of Industry and Market Intelligence at European Aluminium, revealed that the EU exported 1.3 million tonnes of scrap in 2025 while importing 652,000 tonnes to fill the gap. Large outflows of scrap have tightened local supply – when the market heats up, scrap flows to higher-paying overseas buyers, amplifying price pressure. To support its domestic recycling sector, the EU is mulling export restrictions on aluminum scrap. In November 2025, the European Commission said it would develop measures to curb scrap outflows, with a decision expected by the end of Q2 2026. Djibril stressed that shifting global trade flows and restricted Russian metal movement highlight the strategic need for Europe to expand its domestic aluminum supply via recycling.
